We provide governments with guidance, expertise and tools on environmental laws, policy and regulation, as well as assist them to meet their environmental commitments to people and planet.
Member States debate the need for a global pact for the environment
The First Substantive Session on a Global Pact for the Environment took place at UN Headquarters in Nairobi in January 2019. Member States deliberated on the findings of the UN Secretary-General’s report, “Gaps in international environmental law and environment-related instruments: towards a global pact for the environment” and debated the need for a new global pact for the environment. The proposed global pact aims to create coherence, clarity and consensus in international environmental law by creating a legally binding instrument for all countries, outlining rules and principles on international environmental law. Expert dialogue on international environmental governance
An expert dialogue on international governance was held on 18 March 2018, in Nairobi, Kenya. The dialogue was based on the International Environmental Governance: Accomplishments and Way Forward Report, which provides an analysis of reforms taken to date and outlinines possibilities to gear up implementation of the Rio+20 outcome document, “The future we want”. Global environmental assessments do provide important inputs for international negotiations. However, they make inadequate links across themes and disciplines, and furthermore lack a holistic place-based overview of the state of trends and future goals. Read more...
UN Environment-OzonAction joins World Refrigeration Day partnership
During a plenary session of the Second Global Inter-Regional and Parallel Networks Meeting for National Ozone Officers recently held in Paris, UN Environment OzonAction announced its interest in joining the growing coalition of partners around the world that are supporting World Refrigeration Day (WRD), a newly established annual celebration of the refrigeration, air conditioning and heat-pump sector’s myriad contributions to societal goals – including environmental protection. OzonAction became a WRD supporter because of the extremely important role that this sector plays in ensuring the continued success of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. OzonAction second global inter-regional meeting for national ozone officers
UN Environment OzonAction organized the Second OzonAction Global Inter-Regional and Parallel Networks Meeting for National Ozone Officers from, 17-20 February 2019, on the premises of UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France. This event was designed to help National Ozone Officers from developing countries address emerging needs under the Protocol’s hydrochlorofluourocarbon (HCFC) phase out and to prepare for the ratification and initial implementation phase of the Kigali Amendment, which entered into force on 1 January, 2019.
